Prepare your Hot Tub for Cold Season

Before you know it, there will be a chill in the air. As the weather turns colder, there are some steps you can take to make sure your hot tub is prepared for the winter months. Orange County Pools & Spas has been in business in the Hudson Valley for over fifty years, so we know hot tubs and are here to help. Here’s how to prepare your hot tub so that it’s ready for the cold season.

Prepping Your Hot Tub for the Cold Season: First Steps

While the weather is still warm, consider turning off your hot tub for a bit. Once it’s powered down, you can drain it and clean it. After that, you’ll want to clean the filters and the jets, preferably by placing the filters in a cleaning solution. While the hot tub is drained, it can also be helpful to check for leaks. Finally, be sure to check that the pump (and any other equipment for the hot tub) is working properly.

You can then choose to refill the hot tub with clean water if you want to use it during the cold weather. Alternatively, you can leave it drained to save on energy costs if you’re planning on closing for the winter.

Be Sure to Take Cover

You should cover your hot tub whenever it’s not being used. This goes double for cold weather, as this will keep the heat in. By trapping the heat, you’ll save on energy costs. Thankfully, Orange County Pools & Spas has your back with Covana covers, which offer great insulation and allow you to close your hot tub without the hassle of a manual cover. Made in Canada with state-of-the-art materials, Covana covers allow you to use your hot tub during any kind of weather while also turning your hot tub into a fully functional and automated gazebo, saving on maintenance costs.

Other Suggestions

As you prep your hot tub for the cold season, pay close attention to the water level. If the water is too low, the pump (or pumps) can malfunction and freeze. This, in turn, can lead to damage to the hot tub itself. Furthermore, if you’re planning on using the hot tub during colder weather, make sure the water isn’t too hot, as going from extreme heat to cold can be hard to take. If you live in an extremely cold climate, you can choose to run your hot tub in F3 “Standard” mode. This mode allows a sensor to monitor the climate and run the pump when the temperature drops below a certain level to prevent anything from freezing.

As Game of Thrones fans always say: “winter is coming”. Make sure you prepare your hot tub for the cold season accordingly. Orange County Pools & Spas is here to help. With these tips you can save on costs and continue to enjoy your hot tub, even in cold weather.
