How Long Can You Stay in a Hot Tub?

No matter how your day started, we know the perfect way to end it: with a nice, long soak in your hot tub! It’s soothing, warm, and like a little slice of heaven. Not to mention, with hydrotherapy benefits, it’s good for you too. But before you hop in, consider how long can you stay in a hot tub? For most people, the best amount of time in a hot tub is as long as you are comfortable — usually between 20-45 minutes. However, the amount of time you can soak in a hot tub can depend on a few important factors. Ask yourself these questions to determine how long you can stay in your hot tub.

How old are you?

Don’t worry, we won’t tell! Age is just a number, right? However, when it comes to hot tub use, that number does matter, especially for those who are young and not so young. The warm water in a hot tub can affect children and seniors more rapidly than others. When it comes to children, those ages five and under should not use a hot tub at all. Once children are over age five, they can stay in a hot tub for 15-minute incriments. Please note, though, that the water temperature should be lowered closer to 98 degrees when children are using the hot tub.

Similarly, seniors should monitor how they feel in a hot tub and consider lowering the water temperature. As always, listen to your body and exit your hot tub immediately if you don’t feel like yourself.

Are you pregnant?

Using a hot tub during pregnancy can be dangerous to both mom and baby. This is because your body is not able to keep cool at the same rate during pregnancy and can overheat quickly. According to the Mayo Clinic, pregnant women should limit hot tub use to 10 minutes or less in water temperature less than 100 degrees.

What is the hot tub water temperature?

Hot tubs are most enjoyable and most beneficial to many people when the water is heated to anywhere between 98 to 104 degrees. For most users, 102 is a comfortable temperature, but the most ideal temperature is based on personal preference. Just keep this in mind: the hotter your hot tub water, the less time you should spend soaking. This is because hotter water heats up your body more quickly and your body will want to cool down after a short session in the hot tub.

Are you hydrated?

Any amount of time in a hot tub can cause you to lose liquids, often without you even realizing. This is why it is very important to drink ample amounts of water or other clear liquids before and after hot tubbing. If you are well hydrated, your body is better able to stay cool and, therefore, allows you to soak for longer. However, if you are not well hydrated, your body is not able to keep cool and function as it should. Bring water with you to your hot tub to enjoy during your soak.
