Swim spas are one of the world’s greatest mysteries: are they a pool, or are they a hot tub? How can they be both at once? This mystery translates to water care: do you treat it like a pool or a hot tub? The important thing to remember is that your swim spa is its own being and needs its own water care routine to keep it working well. Here’s how to properly care for a swim spa.

Testing the Water

Like pools and hot tubs, you’ll need to test your swim spa water regularly. Depending on how often you use it, try to make a habit of testing your water before each time you use the swim spa, or at least a few times a week. Testing the water levels is very important, not only to maintain the integrity of the swim spa but to make sure the water is safe for whoever is using it. If the levels are unbalanced, there could be an issue, and you’ll want to fix that before enjoying the water. You should also take a sample of your pool water in for a free, professional water test every few months to check for anything your home test kit can’t find.

Cleaning the Water

In addition to testing the water, you should also clean the water. Whenever you see debris, like fallen leaves, in your pool, you’ll want to make sure to get them out. The filters won’t filter everything, like the larger debris, so make sure to take care of that yourself.

Speaking of filters, you’ll also want to clean your filters so they can keep your water clean. The rule of thumb for most pools, hot tubs and swim spas is to rinse your filter once every week or so; deep clean or switch out your filters every 3 months or so; and replace your filters when you drain and refill the water.

Changing the Water

We know testing the water and changing the water may already sound like everything, but you’ll also need to change the water from time to time. Again, this all depends on how often you use your swim spa. About once every six months you’ll want to drain your swim spa and fill it with fresh water. This helps ensure your water is always clean and ready to swim in.
