How to Get Snow Off Your Pool or Spa Cover

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! …just not on your pool or spa cover. While snow appears fluffy and light, it can actually weigh as much as 20 pounds per cubic foot, becoming very heavy very quickly. This weight can be harmful to your pool or spa cover and, if not addressed, snow can cause irreversible damage and lead to a costly cover replacement. Orange County NY gets an average of 39 inches of snow each winter, but this is nothing new for our team at Orange County Pools and Spas. Let’s explain how to get snow off your pool or spa cover this winter.

The Means and Methods for Removing Snow Off Your Pool or Spa Cover

Using a long-handled broom with soft bristles, gently push the snow off your pool or spa cover. If the snow is fresh, it should sweep off rather easily. You can also use a leaf blower to remove snow, but don’t try to melt the snow or ice accumulation using the blower. If the snow on your cover has melted, you can use a pool cover pump to remove the puddled water quickly.

Keep in mind, you should never use a shovel or other tools that could tear or puncture your cover. Also, do not try to use the rock salt used for sidewalks and roads to speed up the melting.

How Often Should I Remove the Snow?

In Westchester County and surrounding areas, snowfall is not a one-time winter event but an ongoing occurrence. So, it is important to tend to your pool or spa cover before snow continues to accumulate. At Orange County Pools and Spas, we recommend removing the snow from your pool or spa cover after every snowfall, or at least once per day when snowing.

Preparing for a Snowy Winter in Orange County NY

As the saying goes, failing to prepare is preparing to fail. Here are a few steps to adequately prepare for snowfall this winter. First, be sure to properly winterize your pool for the season. This will not only prevent your pool from being damaged during freezing temperatures, but it can also prevent your cover from being damaged as well. If your pool water levels are too low, it can put additional strain on the cover, causing it to stretch and even put pressure on the pool structure.

Next, check the condition of your cover and replace it if needed. If you need a new pool or spa cover, contact us to order a new one today. For hot tubs, we recommend the high-quality and snow-durable Covana® cover.

Finally, make sure you have the necessary tools for removing snow on hand. Don’t wait until snow has already fallen to take inventory and prepare.
