While total cost can vary greatly depending on your design choices, the average custom pool cost can range from $50,000 to $150,000+*. Here are a few of the factors that can determine the final pool cost.

Custom Pool Cost vs. Total Project Cost

When you’re picturing your dream pool, is it only the pool you’re envisioning or your entire backyard space as a whole with a pool in it? We’re guessing it’s the latter. 

A custom pool project is always more than just the pool; it’s the installation, equipment, coping, hardscaping, landscaping, fence and so much more. Even little miscellaneous items like pool chemicals and pool toys.

At Orange County Pools and Spas, our pool package includes the pool, equipment, installation, and basic coping. Anything additional, like hardscaping and landscaping, is up to the customer, so you will need to plan ahead for those projects, as well.

Landscaping often costs around $30 per square foot. So for a 1,000-square-foot space, that’s $30,000. Then, hardscaping can add $20,000 to $40,000 or more on top of that.

Vinyl Liner Pool Cost

A standard vinyl pool package is $50,000 to $75,000. Add on the other expenses like hardscaping, landscaping, and fencing and you’re looking at a total cost of $100,000 to $120,000 for a vinyl liner pool.

Fiberglass Pool Cost

A fiberglass pool package is around $70,000 to $90,000. Altogether with hardscaping and landscaping, your total cost may come in at around $150,000 or above. 

Gunite Pool Cost

A gunite pool package is $100,000 to $150,000. Add on everything else, and the total cost is now going to be closer to $200,000 and above.

A great starting point when planning for a custom pool is to determine what dimensions you want and what your backyard space is capable of holding. Pool dimensions include both the size and shape. At Orange County Pools and Spas, we can create nearly any shape including oval, rectangle, square, oblong, L-shape, kidney shape, and free form. 

For pool size, it’s best to think through both your backyard space and what your typical user load will be. A typical rule of thumb is that your pool should use no more than 25 to 35% of your total backyard space. Obviously, the larger the pool, the more your custom pool cost will be.
