Can Pregnant Women Use a Hot Tub?

Swollen feet, tired joints and muscles, and lack of sleep are just a few of the less than enjoyable symptoms pregnant women experience over the course of nine months. Because of this, it may sound tempting to take a soak in a hot tub for relief. At Orange County Pools and Spas, we sometimes get asked about hot tub use during pregnancy. Can pregnant women use a hot tub? The answer is, if certain precautions are taken, then it is possible for pregnant women to soak in a hot tub to reap its benefits. However, pregnant women should adhere to these recommendations before using a hot tub in order to keep herself and her baby safe.

Start by Consulting with Your Doctor

Before pregnant women spend time in a hot tub, they should first consult with their doctor. Your doctor is not only an expert on all things related to pregnancy, they are an expert on you and your pregnancy. Every pregnancy is unique so chatting with your doctor is very important. Getting approval from your doctor will also give you peace of mind to fully enjoy time in the hot tub.

Turn Down the Heat

Typically, hot tub water is set between 100 to 104 degrees. However, during pregnancy, a woman’s body is not able to keep cool like it would otherwise. If your body were to overheat, it could be harmful to both mom and baby. So, to keep hot tub water safe to use, pregnant women should turn the heat down to 98 degrees or less. This temperature of water will still feel warm and soothing but without the risk. Additionally, if you show any signs of overheating such as dizziness, nausea, headache, or confusion, immediately get out of your spa.

Limit Your Time in the Hot Tub

In addition to turning down the temperature, pregnant women should reduce the amount of time spent in a hot tub. The Mayo Clinic recommends pregnant women spend no more than 10 minutes at a time in the spa. After taking a break to cool off, you can take another turn if you’d like.

Make Use of a Cool Down Seat

Another great option is to use a cooldown seat to only submerge your lower half. These seats allow users to sit out of the water with your legs placed into it. Soothe swollen feet and achy legs without having to put your entire body in. Many hot tub brands including Wellis® Spas have cool down seating options
