swim spa is fun for the whole family

Here at Orange County Pools & Spas, we’ve spent over fifty years helping our customers find the best hot tubs, and swim spas. We’ve learned a lot in that time and one of the things we’ve discovered is that relaxation in a spa doesn’t just mean floating. It can also mean exercise. Don’t consider exercise relaxing? Well, with aquatic dance therapy in your swim spa, you can relax and exercise at the same time.

What is Aquatic Therapy?

The term aquatic therapy is a very broad definition that can refer to any type of exercise performed in the water. You can use these exercises for relaxation, fitness, physical rehabilitation, or more. Beginning in the 1980s, many techniques were refined and new ones were created, although water and aquatic dance therapy is reported to have been around since 2400 BC.

Aquatic Dance Therapy Techniques

Aquatic therapy techniques include Ai Chi, which uses breathing and water resistance to relax and strengthen your body. There’s also aqua running (essentially jogging in water) and the Bad Ragaz Ring Method, or BRRM. Bad Ragaz takes its name from its place of origin in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland, and uses rings as physical supports. Other techniques include the Burdenko Method and the Halliwick Concept, which improves your motor control in the water.

Perhaps the most important type of water therapy is aquatic dance therapy. This is sometimes referred to as water dancing or Watsu. Once underwater, you can be gently massaged by the current or move on your own. Aquatic dance therapy uses gentle and flowing underwater motions. Various types of aquatic therapy combine elements of massage. There’s something for everyone, no matter what type of water therapy you want.

Zumba can be another useful technique for you. There are many types of Zumba exercises, but water-based Zumba can be particularly helpful if you need to be gentle with your joints, as it puts less pressure on the joints than other forms of exercise. In addition, the water creates natural resistance. This resistance tones your muscles with every movement.
