5 Tips for Using Your Swim Spa in the Cooler Months

Perhaps you’ve heard of the Hudson Valley’s three S’s of best winter activities: snowboarding, sledding, and skiing. At Orange County Pools and Spas, we’d like to add another S: swim spa use! While fall and winter in this area can be cold and long, using your Wellis® Swim Spa to soak and exercise is an escape for your body and mind. Hop in your swim spa to relax, stay warm, exercise, and dream of spring. As you make use of your Wellis Swim Spa this fall and winter, here are five tips for using your swim spa in cooler months.

1. Keep Your Swim Spa Covered

When your swim spa is not in use, it is a good idea to keep it covered. Doing so is a safety measure and will prevent any falling debris from making its way into your swim spa. Additionally, it will make a significant difference in preventing heat from escaping, saving you from experiencing high and unnecessary energy costs. If removing your swim spa cover feels burdensome, consider getting a cover lifter to help.

2. Turn on Smart Winter Mode

Your Wellis Swim Spa comes programmed with a Smart Winter Mode for when outside temperature dip anywhere below 70 degrees. This setting protects your swim spa from damage due to the cooler weather and makes fall and winter care stress-free.

In Smart Winter Mode, your Wellis Spa will automatically monitor the outside temperature. When it detects a temperature below 70 degrees, it will begin to circulate the water on a regular basis. The colder it is outside, the more frequently it will circulate. This will prevent the water from freezing and causing significant damage to the pipes and inner workings of your swim spa.

3. Have an Entrance and Exit Plan

We have cooler weather in mind when we recommend installing your swim spa close to your home. Not only is this more convenient all year, but in the winter it will make the jaunt less chilly. It’s also a good idea to have cooler weather attire. Stay warm in a robe, slippers, or other foot covering, and even a hat while walking back and forth. Also, have an easily accessible, dry, and possibly warm spot to store your towel.

4. Don’t Neglect Regular Swim Spa Maintenance

We get it. When it’s cold outside, it can be easy to push off regular maintenance. Fight the urge to neglect water and spa care. Doing so will keep your swim spa operating at peak performance, increase its longevity and function, and help prevent more serious issues.

5. Maintain Water Temperature for Energy Efficiency

In most cases, the most energy-efficient way to heat your spa is to always maintain the water at around 100 degrees. This is more energy efficient than letting the water cool and then reheat with each use. Additionally, Wellis Swim Spas have exceptional insulation to prevent heat loss and minimize your energy needs.

When swimming and working out, lower the swim water temperature to around 88 to 90 degrees depending on how intensely you’re working out. Be careful not to swim in water that is too hot even if it feels nice at first. Frequently check your cheeks and forehead for flushness, cool down if you’re feeling lightheaded, and drink plenty of water to avoid overheating.
