If you are new to the world of pools, caring for your pool can seem rather daunting. But don’t worry!  The truth is that water care tips for new pool owners can be fairly simple to follow. You just have to keep a few things in mind. Here’s where to start.

The Basics

There are a few basic things to always remember when caring for your new pool. First, it’s recommended that you test your water multiple times a week. You should also keep your pool at the recommended water level for your pool type. Clean your pump, chlorinator cell, and filter on a regular basis. Vacuuming the pool floor or clearing leaves and debris is something you should do daily. You can check out the Orange County Pools & Spas online store for supplies. We have a great selection of skimmer nets , vacuum heads and brushes. Reach out to our staff if you have any questions.

Pool Balancing

Now’s the time to put your high school science class lessons into practice. pH balance is achieved when the alkalinity and the acidity in the pool are balanced or neutral. Balanced water not only protects the longevity of your pool, but it also protects your family and friends. We recommend keeping your pool at around 7.2.

Another thing you need to check is the calcium level. If calcium levels get too high you’ll end up with cloudy water and eventually a build up on the pool surfaces.

Chemical Know-How

There are a few chemicals you’ll need to understand. Chlorine kills waterborne illness and keeps the water clear. Borate gives your pool that crisp, clear sparkle and helps balance the pH. Pool shock (which is usually an ultra concentrated form of chlorine) kills algae and gets rid of the combined (used up) chlorine. Stabilizers prevent the UV sunlight from destroying chlorine. These are a few of the chemicals you’ll need to keep your pool clean, bright and germ-free.

You can order pool chemicals through our online store or stop in and see us. Our professional staff is ready and willing to assist. It’s important to remember these additional chemicals need to be added in proper amounts. If you’re unsure, come by and talk to us or give us a call. We also offer free water testing. Having your water professionally tested once a week is quick, easy, and highly recommended.

Best Bet

Pool balance may seem a bit confusing at first. After a while you will develop a routine for maintaining a clean and beautiful pool. It’s important to keep a test kit or test strips handy. At Orange County Pools & Spas, we have different test kits you can choose from here in our online store. This will assist you in keeping your pool in perfect balance and good condition.
