Traditional vs. Infrared Saunas: What’s the Difference?

Saunas offer some amazing health benefits: tension and stress relief, pain management, improved cardiovascular and heart health, and skin detoxification, just to name a few. So, it’s no wonder so many people are intrigued by the idea of owning their own sauna. But how do you decide which sauna is right for you? Exactly what is the difference between a traditional and an infrared sauna?

How hot is too hot?

The main difference between ,,traditional and infrared saunas is how they produce heat — and how hot each one becomes. With a traditional sauna, the entire room is heated to up to 194°F (the maximum temperature at ceiling level that is allowed in the United States) and the ambient temperature in the room heats up your body, producing a deep sweat. If you’re thinking, “that sounds hot,” you’re right. The extreme heat might not be right for everyone. But there’s another alternative that is an excellent choice.

Infrared saunas offer a milder sauna experience. Instead of a heater that warms the room, infrared saunas emit infrared heat waves that penetrate the body directly. Infrared heat is the same heat produced by the sun that all living organisms need. But, in your sauna, it comes without the harmful ultraviolet waves that the sun emits.

Though the infrared heat will warm the walls and raise the temperature in your sauna, the air temperature will be much lower, in the 120-140°F range. In fact, you could hop right into your sauna after turning it on, while the air temperature is still cool, and the invisible infrared heat waves will go to work and quickly get you sweating, even before the room feels warm. Of course, many people enjoy a warm, relaxing atmosphere so they wait a few minutes to enter their sauna until it has warmed up.

Wondering what it feels like to use an infrared sauna? It just feels like you’re relaxing in a warm, but not too warm, sauna! You cannot feel the infrared wavelengths directly. But as you sit in your infrared sauna, they will penetrate deep into your muscles, tissues, and cells and produce the deep, clarifying sweat you need.
