How to Maintain an Infrared Sauna

Using an infrared sauna is a health investment you will not regret. Just like self-care and maintenance are important for your body’s long-term health, sauna care and maintenance are important for maintaining the quality of your sauna long-term. The good news about how to maintain an infrared sauna is that it’s fairly simple. With these pro tips, your sauna quality will last, giving you a much-deserved return on your investment.

The Sauna Interior

The interior cleaning of the sauna is minimal. Wipe down the bench, walls, and floor after each use. You can even make your own cleaning solution. Start by diffusing a few drops of high-quality essential oil in your sauna. Birch oil is commonly used for cleaning. This scent has naturally occurring antiseptic properties. Mix it with water and give your sauna a quick wipe down for mild cleaning and refreshment between uses.

You will want to do a more thorough cleaning about every two weeks. To clean a little deeper, you can mix one tablespoon of baking soda in one gallon of water and lightly scrub your wood. Keep in mind that using filtered or distilled water will help keep mineral build-up at bay.

The great thing about a Jacuzzi® infrared sauna from Orange County Pools & Spas is that it’s made with cedar or basswood. This makes upkeep a breeze. Concentrate your cleaning efforts on the bench, since that will get the most use.  You can use a mild dish soap mixed with water to remove stains. Lightly sand the area for stubborn stains.

Once a month, the floor should be vacuumed and gently mopped. This will be beneficial for the looks and comfort of your sauna.

The Sauna Exterior

The Clearlight Sanctuary™ IS-C is a unique corner unit that would fit excellently inside or outside your home. When your infrared sauna is outdoors, you can pressure wash it periodically to keep it in pristine condition. When your infrared sauna is kept indoors, simply wipe down the exterior with a dust cloth and use a light homemade cleaning solution as described above.

The Sauna Heating Element

The Jacuzzi Clearlight Sanctuary™ line from Orange County Pools & Spas is equipped with True Wave heaters, which are designed to produce negative ions. With the use of the ceramic compound, which combines carbon and ceramic to produce a healing heat that is unparalleled, these heaters clean and purify the air. You can just wipe down your heater with a damp sponge, to remove dust or buildup, but be sure your heater has cooled completely before cleaning.

Quick Sauna Problem Prevention Tips

There are a few things you can do to minimize dirt, dust, or debris from entering your sauna.

  • Clean your body with a quick shower before entering your sauna.
  • Use a towel to wrap around your body or place it under your body and feet to protect the bench and floor.
  • Vent your sauna after each use to prevent moisture retention. Ventilation helps your sauna stay fresh.

Quick Reminder Tips for Sauna Owners

  • Keep sauna doors open to ensure the air is circulating while cleaning. The sauna should not be in operation or producing heat during the cleaning.
  • After the cleaning is finished, let your sauna fully ventilate. The air should be free of any chemicals and the wood should be dry.
  • Do not paint or stain the inside of your sauna. This would decrease the ability of the cedar to release the humidity needed for the proper function of the sauna.
