5 Tips for Moving a Hot Tub

Fun fact: a hot tub can weigh anywhere from 500 to 1,500+ pounds when dry.

Not so fun fact: Because of its extensive size and shape, moving a hot tub can feel stressful.

Owning a hot tub is supposed to bring feelings of relaxation, Zen, and calm. So don’t let moving a hot tub do the opposite. At Orange County Pools & Spas, we can help you! Here are five tips for moving a hot tub the stress-free way.

Prepare the Way

To move a hot tub is not an easy task but certainly a doable one, especially with the proper preparations. First, measure the width and height of your hot tub to verify it will fit through any openings, gates, or doorways you will pass through as you move it. You also need to prepare the new installation site at your new residence. This means choosing a level spot and having an appropriate foundation ready. You also want to arrange for an electrician to come connect your hot tub soon after moving.

Gather Needed Tools

If you are moving a hot tub on your own, there are some supplies you will need to do so. We recommend you have:

  • A garden hose
  • A wet and dry vacuum OR a few bath towels
  • Two 4×4 boards
  • A furniture dolly
  • Tie-down straps
  • A moving truck
  • Plenty of helpers

Remove the Hot Tub Water

For obvious reasons, your hot tub needs to be drained and free of water before moving day. To ensure all water is gone, we recommend draining it at least 24 hours before you move a hot tub to a new location. The good news is draining a Wellis® Spa is simple.

First, pull out the draining cap located at the bottom of the hot tub cabinet as far as it will go. Then, connect a garden hose and push the drain back in about halfway. This will allow the water to begin draining. Once the water is completely drained, remove the hose and replace the drain cap. You should then use a wet and dry vacuum or a towel to remove any remaining water until it is completely dry.

Let the Furniture Dolly Do the Work

Work smarter, not harder when it’s time to move your hot tub. Together with your helpers, slowly lift one side of the hot tub and place one of the 4×4 boards under it. Repeat this step for the other side of your hot tub so that it is completely lifted off the ground and resting on the 4×4 boards. Now, slide the dolly under the hot tub, remove the boards, and push the hot tub to the moving truck. Once on the truck, safely secure it in place with tie-down straps. At your new location, complete these steps in reverse order to get your hot tub to its new home.

Moving Your Hot Tub Cover

When you move a hot tub, it is best to remove the hot tub cover and move it separately. Even so, be sure to store the hot tub cover safely and handle it with care. If your cover becomes cracked or otherwise damaged during the move, it would be ineffective and need to be replaced.
