While it may seem like swim season just began, it’s quickly coming to a close. And that means it’s time to make a plan to winterize your pool. Properly closing your pool for winter is essential for protecting your pool from significant damage from freezing temperatures, snow, and other off-season hazards. So, when is the best time to close your pool for the season? Here are four signs it’s time to winterize your pool.

1. Fall Activities are in Full Swing

It’s that time of year when life seems to move at a little bit faster pace. Kids start back to school, football season kicks off, and pumpkin spice goodies are available everywhere. All of these fall happenings are good signs for pool owners that it’s time to winterize your pool. With fall activities gearing up, your schedule can quickly become hectic and full. Make a plan now and get the supplies you need so it doesn’t fall by the wayside.

2. Brrrr! It’s Too Cold to Swim

If your family is not swimming as much because it’s too cold outside or the water is too chilly, there’s a good chance it’s time to winterize your pool. Closing your pool for winter is all about finding the goldilocks of temperature: Not too hot and not too cold but just right. If you close your pool too soon, the weather could get warm again causing algae to bloom and consume all of your pool closing chemicals.

If you wait too long, you run the risk of an early freeze damaging your pool. At Orange County Pools and Spas, we recommend you close your pool once the average temperature is below 65 degrees. In the Hudson Valley area, this is typically late September through October.

3. Fall is Falling…into Your Pool

The red, yellow, and orange leaves that mark the season are beautiful…until they find their way into your pool in mass! If fall leaves are dropping in large quantities, it’s probably time to winterize your pool. And fall leaves aren’t the only debris you avoid by closing your pool. Prevent limbs, acorns, snow, and more from making their way into your pool as well.
